In fairness to Michal and Wikidot, reading the above there are 2 key points you seem to have overlooked:
The notice from SoftLayer says "Short Notice Maintenance" and Michal said "We have just received an information from our datacenter operator, Softlayer…".

The notice was more than a few hours - the blog post is dated 23 September. I think you make a good point about perhaps looking at a different method to alert us to this potential downtime, but I believe Michal made an effort to provide this information in a timely manner and passed on the information as soon as he heard about it.

Perhaps I'm off base on this, but our site did experience connectivity issues starting around 830pm (-05GMT). Reading the above, this sounds like it was routine (scheduled) maintenance to enhance the capacity of the network/farm. If thats the case, I think more than a few hours notice is not unreasonable.

In addition to more than a few hours notice, I am of the mindset that more than a blog post should go out when the potential for a system down event is there. Perhaps a distribution list to send notification out that something like this will occur. Given that there were some connectivity issues, how can I be expected to read a blog post on the site thats not working? Its like sending am email to let everyone know the email server is down? :p
