Another Tuesday, another rant. To be honest I've been lazy with the blog lately. Anyhow, this week we're focussing on the bug tracker, clearing out as many issues as possible. My own contribution has been to change the theme to Cherry Red Deep Blue.

Lets see… need to find something to rant about.
I know, this'll do:
There are 199 weneeds on this blog, and only 26 have been implemented (with another 30-40 I estimate to be closed/cancelled). That's more than 100 requests still left unanswered!
Bug fixes should always come first, I agree — but would be great to see some more of those weneeds closed as the features are added :)
Until then, I'll go back to messing around with my two new, big toys. Data Forms and Private Categories. [rant] Both only part-implemented, I might add ;-) [/rant]

I'd rant about data forms not letting me withhold form labels from the actual page content and not letting me put dividers (====) between inputs, but I'm not totally sure that's still true.
I've been drooling over the idea of forms for a long time, and was about to implement them for a new site when I discovered those little bugaboos. It's still exciting that they're coming into shape though.
I would love to use colspan and rowspan if at all possible.

There's not a lot to rant about with all of the great things going on here at Wikidot, but a nagging issue that still affects me is the fact that Hotmail and Comcast are blocking email from Wikidot. The biggest problem is for those who were able to sign up before the mail was blocked and now if you forget your password (as my son did), you can't get the email link to change it.
This seems to an issue that waffles between hot and cold and it would be nice to hear what the straight scoop is. Is there any way that we, as users, can petition these services on Wikidot's behalf? Is there some kind appeal process available to Wikidot?
I honestly don't know enough about what it takes to land on a blacklist and what it takes to get off, but personally I don't think telling potential users to set up a new GMail account is great solution. I'm happy to do my part if there's something the end users can do to help.

Comcast should be accepting emails since a month or so, when we got them to unblack list us.
Hotmail is something else… they just randomly reject emails and then suddenly accept them again. It might be some kind of anti-spam thing, or just incompetence.
I agree the Hotmail thing is annoying - since I deal with support emails, I know that it's one of the things people get hit by over and over.
If you forget your password and can't get the email link, drop me a line at moc.todikiw|troppus#moc.todikiw|troppus… :-)

On behalf of my son, thanks for taking care of Comcast! Did I miss this being reported as fixed?

My fault, I forgot to report this. We got it fixed on 13 January:

Then let's rant, although I am more than happy that we finally have private categories, and also, I would like to say thanks to Wikidot team for a impressively quick reaction to my objection on landing page. The solution is more than I expected. Thumbs up, guys. Really.
Now, the rant.
I would like to be able to send a notification mail or PM to all members of my site, but not as me, Brunhilda, but as Istorijska biblioteka. Like, for example, I go to Site Manager, and there I have an option Send PM to all members of the site.

Hey Brunnie, like this? http://blog.wikidot.com/weneed:61
I've added it to http://projects.wikidot.com/thread:132 as well.

Exactly, as a matter of fact, I had this Weneed in mind… :)
EDIT: Hm, If you added this to the Site Branding project, a feature meant for only Pro++++ users, then it means I will never have it. :( :(:(:(:(………
I think this is not a branding thing, and this shouldn't be a part of that project… This is a matter of communication, not distancing from Wikidot brand. I don't mind having Wikidot logo in my PMs, I just want to have them….

Votey votey on the weneed then. There are quite a lot of top weneeds that are for community admins.

I don't understand. I did voted on this weneed… I cannot vote more than once, you know…

Just got an e-mail asking me to change what my DNS records are pointing to for custom domains. I don't see anything about this on the site, and the message isn't cryptographically signed. How do I know this isn't a spoofed message from someone trying to hijack wikidot?
(I mean, other than by noting that it is the address already used by the main server. I can actually verify by myself reasonably well; I just mean in general that doing this sort of thing leaves you and your customers open to phishing attacks.)
This does appear to be genuine. I have just received it for my sites, and one client of mine has passed it on to me because he was worried it was a phishing attack. My rant is that it should have been announced on this blog before we got the email (which can get overlooked in the mass of watching notifications). Wikidot knew this was coming but even the community admins like me were caught unawares. Wikidot communications have improved over the last year but there are still times when I think a communications manager would fill the gap.

I've now updated the IP address for my sites (I use that rather than cname in order to keep the emails working via my host 1&1). I assume here will be no problem but we will see tomorrow when the update is completed.

Not much to rant about, really. Wikidot is getting better and better. Thanks, by the way, for private categories and data forms.
Now, I was just wondering how much of this email black-listing thing would have to do with the (fortunately now gone) automatic watching feature.
And, speaking of that, I'd like to get back to complainer mode: How about an extra line on the permissions switchboard for "watching"?

Yes, I too think that the old automatic watching might have contributed to the hotmail issue.

I've created a new bug report for the Hotmail issue. Feel free to discuss there, and up-rate that issue.

I'd like to thank wikidot for this warning — especially giving me plenty of notice. No way I'm going to get around to changing it until this weekend, so I'm glad I have some lead time.
Apologies for not announcing that email on the blog. It only affects a small portion of site admins, and we did not realize people would suspect a phishing attack (because it's so easy to check that the IP address is real, using 'ping').

All changed, all working fine. Thanks.

Okay, so this isn't really a rant, I could really use the following:
Yes!
Yes!
YES!!
Oh, sorry… *embarrassed* … let me reiterate:
I agree ;-)

There is a spec for a new watchers module on the design wiki.
Maybe time for a new TagCloud design?
