Ed Johnson, James Kanjo and several other people have written to me to point out that it's trivial to hide the toolbars with CSS. As Ed explains,
To totally hide the navi-bar it's a simple matter to change the top margins of #navi-bar and #container-wrap-wrap. I used the z-index as another method to hide it.
Which leads us to a clarification in the Terms of Service:
The use of custom CSS that hides, moves, covers, or otherwise interferes with the visibility, positioning and functionality of the top or bottom Toolbar elements will be considered as prohibited usage.
Anyone considering a CSS exploit to hide the toolbars should realize that (a) we'll see it and (b) we will do something about it. C'est comme ca.
Now, we're not 100% evil. Well, maybe we are. 110% even. But for those of you who wrote to me saying that even the low, low, low cost of a pro-lite account was too much, here is a present:
We're giving away five (5) Pro accounts. Tell us, on this blog thread, why you someone you admire deserves one, with a link to their sites. We'll choose the winners and announce them. Competition lasts until Sunday night.
You might be evil, but you're our evil. =)
I think it makes sense if you use the data from the "site karma" you calculated earlier, and give those free pro accounts for those who made the most active free sites on Wikidot.
just my 2 cents :-) .
@Hassan, that's a good idea, we'll do that if no-one comes forward to claim their prize.

Excuse me, but I don't understand your linking to my post saying about Newsletter… What did you mean by that?

Strange… It should put the post in question on the top of the page, and not on the bottom…
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
My first choice for a free Pro would be Brunhilda for her amazing Историјска библиотека.
A different suggestion posted in December — “Someone oughta give the guy a free pro account” — was for someone whom I know very well …
Erich, you deserve all 5 Pro accounts with all the work you've done!
Thank you, Erich, you are so kind! :D

I second that, about that Erich guy. Oh wait, I firsted it.
It is chinees to me but that site really looks good. But since you Erich also helped me out I would agree with james. Two nominees for me… BTW I saw a nice modification of the toolbar on http://nsb-enviro.wikidot.com/… maybe if this would be tolerated, the toolbar is not so bad what not can be said of the wiki team. they are bad to bone :-). I see they have een increase of members of 10% in five days! again BTW don't call a new pro-lite member a "beta-tester that can be contacted" in the list of members.

I was going to sit and blather about my wikis- but then I'd look like a selfish fool and that wouldn't do! I vote http://www.wikidot.com/user:info/genesisnx Genesisnx because she has done an amazing job, and has some awesome (yet private wikis). She has also done alot of work helping me with my wikis (particularly http://2805.wikidot.com/ for instance she did the beautiful CSS for us) , and it wouldn't be looking anywhere as sharp as it is today without her skill and added content!
Omnia mutantur, nihil interit.
I vote, no, I demand ErichSteinboeck gets a Pro account. He already contributed to the community with innumerable Wikidot tricks and tutorials such as this epic piece of work.
As for his sites, uhhh, I think this is one of his sites: http://evdonaucity.wikidot.com/, or at least he's one of the admins.
5 accounts… 105% evil. I got James Kanjo, because he is the admin of like 7 sites, mod of 1, and member of like 5 more after that. I think he is an awesome programmer too, as he has helped me with my site aswell.
To be honest. i couldn't give a stuff about site karma awards.
There are those that have helped enormously in the community.
without them, wikidot would of probably failed.
I would suggest "of the year" awards
erich. should get "geek" of the year" award.
Brunni.should get " bloody woman" of the year award"
Rob Elliot should get "css design geek" of the year award
Helmuti should get "always there, and always helpful" of the year award
gerdami should get "incuded includes" award
Can i have a "how to piss squark and gabrys off" award?
I'd vote for ya, LOL

Thanks Phil,
However, please do NOT vote for me.
When I see how much money I gave to Greece for my holidays (and my family), €25 I paid for my pro-lite account are peanuts !
gerdami - Visit Handbook en Français - Rate this howto:import-simple-excel-tables-into-wikidot up!
@gerdami.
and 5 x 25 of them euro wotsits as a "thank you " is a pittance as well.
I nominated you because you are worthy of that nomination.
i would of liked to have nominated three more.
Ed Johnson,James, and david.
You and a few others have been a really good dog. if i had it in my power, i would give you a bone to say thank you.
i have learnt so much from you guys. I like to think i have passed some of my learnings on to others.
You have made wikidot a bearable existence for me.
I would also liked to of awarded another award.
This would be a very special award. Its called the Spotty behind award
Its called spotty behind because its for someone who as been sitting on his arse for the past 2 and a bit years, and finally got off it, and started to do things that he should of done way back then.
I shall now go and hide in my "concrete coal bunker"
Helmuti is a machine over at the community forums. If I think of something to do there, he's the one who makes it work. It's people like he and Chett and Erich whose helpfulness got me hooked on wikidot. And once they helped me, it made me want to help out others as well. You can't buy the kind of contributions they've made here, but you can reward them. I'll single out Helmuti, since, as aptly noted above, he's always there.
Thanks David, but I am a pro account user already… - do not forget - this is for giving away 5 pro accounts!

Just so you are aware, the only ToS I agreed to follow was the ToS which was presented when I created my account. If you actually plan to enforce new changes to the ToS you had better add a check-box on your login that causes people to re-agree to the ToS every time they log in. Otherwise, I don't think people re-agree to any ToS changes you make.
@pieterh: JakeH and North are right. You need to hit us up to agree to the new terms sooner than later…
-Ed
[edit] Actually, it seems JakeH and North were incorrect. As Helmuti points out below, the terms I quoted were just changed in the last couple of hours, so the terms we all agreed prior to this change stated that it was our responsibility to stay current with the ToS. As I said below, the new policy or notifying us of changes is much better (and more fair and reasonable).
[edit2] I just check the history of the ToS. The change was actually made back on 19 Aug 2008, so any users who joined since that date should expect notification of the changes.
Community Admin
@Ed, you're right, thanks.
Previously, we could change the ToS silently. We added this notification aspect to make it more transparent. My blog posting counts as a form of notification, but it's not in the form specified.
Note that the change is a clarification because even without this change, points 4 and 5 of the prohibited usage list could be taken as covering the toolbars.
Portfolio
I wanted to propose myself for one of the 5 Pro accounts with http://bvs.wikidot.com/ (implements almost every feature available, constant presence in the what's hot tops, easily accessible content, clean theme, etc.) and http://animeversus.wikidot.com (for the use of live templates). Then I saw someone else must name me.
Just after this I will present some thoughts (most of them will lower the chances of getting one free Pro account).
To make it very clear - I am not a member of the wikidot team - this is my private oppinion. Could be the team is warning the Master admin of such a site before doing anything else..

I understand. Then this is for the team: What if the Master Admin is no longer visiting wikidot?
In the "Site manager" there is an important menu point - "Tansfer Master Admin" to another admin - this can be done by the old admin or over moc.todikiw|troppus#moc.todikiw|troppus by another admin.

Your wish / thought is understandable… :) :
But in the ToS from the start ( Version 0 - 31.July 2006 - till today! ) http://www.wikidot.com/legal:terms-of-service#toc0 there is the point:
I can imagine that this is not fine for many users - but this is now the legal direction since the beginning.
Could be the policy will change - I can not imagine the following chaos with different user -dependent ToS but again - this is all my private oppinion.
Edit1: it has changed in the last hour :
Ok. this has the same effect… as before…

I didn't realize the change was made so recently. Admittedly, I don't check the ToS regularly, but I thought that it was our responsibility as users to stay current with the ToS document. Clearly, the new verbiage states that we will now be notified of any changes to the ToS and have to agree to them to continue to use the service.
This new policy is much better. I will like being notified of changes to the ToS agreement.

Community Admin
Thank you for pointing this out.
I didn't know that the change was recent. I thought this has been from the first version of the ToS.
Also, thank you for letting me know how I can become the Master Admin. I knew about the option Transfer Master Admin, but when the old admin has let me in charge of this wiki he didn't transfer it (his last activity was on 22 November 2008).
@North,
Thanks for your detailed comment. I'm just checking the ToS if I can immediately delete your account for posting this, but for now, I see you're safe… :-)
OK, for several reasons but mainly because bvs.wikidot.com is one of the most successful Wikidot sites ever, I'm nominating North for one of the free pro accounts.
