A bunch of small changes to the toolbars will be pushed out today:
- Bottom toolbar is more compact, with smaller images and text. Pop-up rollovers are not going to happen, because these are too slow on some PCs.
- Bottom toolbar won't show on private sites unless you're a pro user and explicitly ask for it.
- Top toolbar gets Edit, History, Tags, and Source action.
- "Random site" is renamed to "Explore".
- "Your-free-project" action field becomes a more general explorer - type any Wikidot site name to go there.
- Added StumbleUpon bookmark icon.
Thanks to everyone who made these suggestions. Some people have asked us if it's OK to change the color and background of the top Toolbar, and the answer is "yes". If you want to know how to do this, ask on the community site and no doubt someone will explain.
Final bit of good news: we fixed a database "auto-vacuum" problem that was causing Wikidot to run v e r y s l o w l y at certain times of day. We're now measuring database response time and anything over two seconds should be automatically flagged so we can fix it. If you find any particular page takes too long to load, let us know.
On some pages of my wikis, I have made it so that users can NOT view the source of a given page. Won't putting a button up there eliminate some privacy in regards to that?
Take for instance, my "Contact" page. If users see the history and view its source, then they will discover my private e-mail address.
I would change "Other remarkable sites from Wikidot" to "Other remarkable sites powered by Wikidot or "Other remarkable sites hosted at Wikidot"

I like the latest design of the top bar, but I'd have to agree….There's all sorts of security/privacy problems with allowing ANYONE to see a page source and history. Could we have those only appear for logged in users with the appropriate level of access, please?
On a related note, would it be possible to push the login field/account tab onto the top bar? As its a unified image across wikidot as a whole, and you login to wikidot as a whole, it makes sense to me if the login is embedded in the topbar.
@ Balthus.
if you have it set so only admins can see the buttons in admin:mange, the top navi bar should follow those permissions
Go to "permissions " in the site manager and amde the setup for the "page options buttons" only viewable for "members" or admins, not for anonymous or registered users of wikidot.
Edit: sorry phil, you were faster… :)

Thats cracked it, thanks guys :)
I'm curious, did ErichSteinboeck win a Pro account?
I think not, he is not ( over his profile and membership) a member of "Pro" -site.

Winners will be announced RSN.
(Truth is, I facepalmed when I read this, utterly forgot Sunday evening and have been traveling since.)

Excuse me, but I don't see those changes in the top toolbar. My (and all others) toolbar is as always. I am also a little bit concerned about those buttons on the top bar… EDIT is ok, but SOURCE and HISTORY… Can you make it optional as it is now? I mean, that bottom commands can be made invisible for visitors…

The buttons will be visible only when the ones on the bottom are also. So yes, optional in the same way. They're not yet rolled out, we should see them tomorrow.

As you can see from my site (click signature) the edit bar is an important part of the site. This will look quite bad if it is simply replicating what is in the navi-bar. If discuss is moved to the navi-bar then I can just remove the custom CSS of the edit bar and it can return to the bottom.
It would be ideal if all of the edit bar could be moved to the navi-bar and maybe the options button opens an extended navi-bar…?
Or… we can use check boxes to pick and choose which buttons appear in the navi-bar…?
Anyway, keep up the good work; loving the progression of this.
Why don't you make a how-to on how to change colors and shapes on the toolbar? Or make a contest in toolbar design? Or, make a page where people can post their solutions and designs of a toolbar, together with a CSS code so others can chose the one they like or the one that best suits to their sites?

It's still a new site module.
Fixed now. General explorer works.

You're right. Something got mis-installed… thanks for that.

I would prefer icons with tooltips and / or a popup table of icons (similar to AddThis) with the full set of commands normally available at the bottom of a page. Just thinking…

Pop-up menus are unpleasant IMO (in my opinion) unless they hide stuff we rarely use. A row of icons covering all available actions is probably what we will eventually make. I personally prefer text actions but there is not enough room for too many of them.

The one you once made with a link to the quick reference was useful.

That might work well as a toolbar overlay, in fact. But I really want to get that into the editor so it's available everywhere.

There is a bug in the comment module, must have rolled in with the new version this morning. When you post a comment, it leaves the text there, as if your post failed. Thus you click again, creating duplicate posts. I've also been hit by this.
We're working on fixing that right now, sorry.

Fixed.

Just a continued bee-in-the-bonnet. Anchors still move the first few lines of the site underneath the toolbar. See several pages on my site for examples.
Should work properly now.

2. In my site's toolbar, there are some captions in Polish and some in English. Hope it's temporary..
3. I don't see thumbnails in bottom toolbar, only titles and some space.
Thanks for this report, we'll fix that asap.

The toolbar alignment should work better now. We'll translate it properly into Polish a little later.
