Happy Thanksgiving
From the desk of pieterh
Via the turkey-sandwich department, on 1259236022|%e %B %Y, %H:%M

Today is, for our American friends, Thanksgiving. Historically, it's got something to do with turkey and corn, I think. Today, this is the day when friends and family gather to celebrate the American Dream, eat and drink, and prepare for Black Friday, the greatest shopping day ever. So I hear.

But this blog posting is neither about turkey nor cheap computers, but about the things we like most about Wikidot. Kind of an anti-rant. What are you most thankful for? My personal favorite bits of Wikidot are the Edit button, which has to be one of the greatest inventions ever, after cornbread, and custom domains. And being able to make custom stylesheets. And the fact that although there are 4,000 times more users than when I signed up, it runs as fast and as stable as ever. That's down to Michal and his team, who are amazing. Thanks, guys! :-)

Thank you too! And I'm grateful that I know some English so that I am able to try to explore Wikidot.com and try to learn it, which I'm doing for the last few days…

What a great Site!

I'm pretty sure there were Pilgrims and Indians too, but ya know.

I have to thank those who created wikidot, and those that make it sing. I watched a video about an open-source project recently, and it said that anything that is not open-source, is doomed to fail. I don't know about you, but I definitely think wikidot has not failed. Sure, we've had some bumps in the road, but I think wikidot will probably last a long time.

Maybe someday, I can say I have a wikidot site, and people don't look at me like I'm crazy. (Wiki..com?)
So thanks guys, for making a great site!

@graphmastur: looking back at my own 30+ years of programming, this has been 100% the case. Every open source project I ever wrote still exists and is used somewhere, and every closed one has died or is used only by a single customer.

That was the main reason for pushing Wikidot.org last year, but the result was a fork in the code, as we did not really have the right infrastructure to push changes from the open source code back into the "real" Wikidot code. We've fixed all that now, with much better internal structures.

We want to publish the current Wikidot code properly next year, and start accepting patches and fixes from people who want to hack the code (which is fun, and something I've also been doing). This, along with full backup/restore is a big part of guaranteeing every Wikidot user that their sites will work forever (on their own boxes, and with an independent community of experts, if necessary).

I'm pretty thankful for deep-frying. Because sometimes regular frying just isn't unhealthy enough.

Wikidot has been amazing in the past year. Admittedly some of the changes have caused growing pains, but we're better for it. I honestly don't really know how long Pieter has been CEO, but since he became the public face of wikidot, things have really improved. The development pace has quickened and focused, wikidot has become more decisive and yet more attentive to the community too, and my old concerns about whether wikidot would still be around to host me down the line are gone. Thanks Pieter. =)

And to the rest of the wikidot team as well. I don't see you guys peek out often, but I'm grateful for your efforts. A place like wikidot isn't just another job. It takes some courage to build something out of nothing and hope nearly half a million people show up to use it.

And to the community. When I first showed up you were incredibly eager to help, so much so, it was contagious. You're good people and I'm glad I ran into you.

I'm thankful for LaTeX support, and Wikidot's simple syntax generally. Also, community support and updates on this blog. It's probably my favorite free software since 7zip. Have a good turkey day, fellow Americans and eaters of turkey!

I echo David's sentiments. The pace and quality of changes in the last year has been fantastic. I'm thankful I stumbled upon Wikidot when I was searching for a solution for my workplace and even more thankful that I've been blessed with meeting some fantastic individuals along the way.

The quality of the people who make up our growing community makes it easy to want to actively participate and help where I can.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Wikidot friends!!!
