With a little luck, I'm getting this blog posting out before midnight CET. I've just finished the draft of the open source template site and am handing over to leiger.
This site is about fifty pages, and that's more or less a skeleton site, ready for use. It uses a new approach to forums, built entirely around categories, ListPages, and parent pages.
You can see it's not yet finished. We need a new ListPages variable, %%children%%, which would provide the number of child pages for the current page. Since we added the ability to list pages per parent, the forum uses parent pages to organise threads into 'sections'.
The site is quite fun. Take a look. Me, I'm grabbing a beer. Fifty pages for one day is more than enough.
On your main:start page, I would suggest clearing the floats before the include:
(the "table's" first row is misaligned with the following rows)
Just did that =)

The only thing that strikes me as missing is some sort of 'most recent post' timestamp for each section on the startpage.
I've noted this and other missing functionality here: http://opensource-template.wikidot.com/wiki:what-s-missing-on-this-template-site

I would order sections by titleAsc, not dateCreatedAsc.
Then I would try to have not only sections (with a hidden tag) but also subsections.

Yes, this was one of the options I'd thought of. But the order cannot be alphabetic, the sections follow a logical order. I want to use rating (see http://opensource-template.wikidot.com/wiki:what-s-missing-on-this-template-site).
As for sub-sections, not in this template. It gets over-complex and this breakdown is already sufficient (note that most FOSS projects today have one or two mailing lists that act as 'sections').
We can make a heavier forum package later that has subsections. Can we do ListPages inside ListPages?

Unfortunately not. It's obvious that it would not be able to be done on just one page, so I tried doing this:
sandbox:1 has a ListPages modules
sandbox:2 lists all pages in the sandbox category
Unfortunately, I get an The ListPages module does not work recursively. error.

So the other way of making subsections is to put each forum section into its own category and then create subsections within the category. Threads can still all be in a single category, attached to parent pages.
This means that creating a new forum section is a bit more work but it might be something that Tsangk's installer resolves. I.e. "Install forum package into category Y:" is how to create a new section.

And actually this is a nice evolution of the forum model so far implemented.
