Hands up those of you who have Facebook accounts. Great! I could bet over 70% of you are waving your hands. So are we. And so would most of our friends. And friends of our friends… The undeniable feature of Facebook is that magically people not only use it, but also consider it the most important online communication channel. Weather you like it or not, Facebook is changing the way we connect and interact with each other and share things online.
Today at Wikidot.com we are introducing a totally new feature: integration with Facebook Connect. From now on you can
- connect accounts at your two favorite web services,
- use your Facebook account to log into Wikidot,
- use a Facebook account to create a Wikidot account.
Connecting existing accounts is a piece of cake:
Right now the benefit of connecting your existing Wikidot account to Facebook is easier logging in. Instead of providing name+password combination, a single click at Connect button should be enough.
Now, for these without a Wikidot account the whole sign-up process is simplified dramatically — no password, no captcha, no email verification. You do not even have to fill the registration form. Again, a single Connect button can get you a new, fully functional Wikidot account.
Later on we will add more Facebook-related features, such as sharing or inviting friends. Wouldn't it be great to create a new site and quickly send invitations to your Facebook friends? Yes, we are working on it too.
Is there any particular way you would like to use your Facebook account from within Wikidot? It would be great to hear your opinion!

Hmmm… I had to disconnect from my Facebook account because it makes my avatar look ugly and i can't change it back :(

After connecting we are using your profile image from Facebook. If there is a reasonable demand to change this behavior, we could work on it. Still though, the simplest solutions go first.

I'm glad I read that part. I wouldn't want it to use my FB picture. What's the point in me setting a custom one then?
Agreed. I won't link my Facebook account then, as I'd like to use a different avatar here.
The real benefit is for new users that will find it even easier to sign up though, not for existing users like myself, so it's not a major issue at the moment.

Cool — somewhat cheaper than buying facebook — put that on the to-do list for next year.
I would be nice if there was a module or something that would allow me to put a facebook connect button anywhere on a site so that a person could click and join without having to go to first click the "create account" on the login status. This would make it easy to show everyone who visits that they have that option and create a shortcut for them. Would this ever be possible?

EricT, I'd suggest hiding that link completely with CSS and getting people to sign up with a Join module instead.
This has the added benefit that they automatically become members of your site as well… whereas the "create account" link only gives them a Wikidot account that is not a member of any site.

You know I did not understand that to be the case, thank you. I do have a join module going but I will hide that create account link. This has undoubtedly impacted my membership join rate. Darn.

The obvious extension to this would be a link from a person's Wikidot profile to their Facebook profile.
That way we can find the entire life history of all the Wikidot staff.
…BTW, any plans for Google+ or Diaspora?

We are not going to make Facebook Connect obligatory at any time. I can see no point in doing so.
Also, we are not choosing any sides in any war, just trying to do what we think is best for our project at this point. And we definitely think an easier sign-up is needed. Facebook Connect was the most obvious choice for us.
Still not sure about Twitter sign-in, we do not want to lose any more simplicity. Personally I am getting lost if a site I am going to sign up to offers to many options.
