Hi Wikidot folks,

we would like to inform you that next week,

Monday to Wednesday (3—5 September)

we will be performing a major re-configuration of our servers behind Wikidot.com. All our servers and services will be migrated to a different location and a different provider, namely to Amazon Web Services in Virginia, which is about 1,000 miles North-East from our current location, Dallas TX.

Mugs and T-shirts in our new gadget shop, open 24/7!

Hi, we have just opened a shop with a few Wikidot gadgets you might find cool to have. For now there are laser-engraved mugs (white and black) and black T-shirts with a small Wikidot logo on the chest and a larger one on the back.

Although we have not advertised the shop so far, we are glad that some of you have already purchased a few gadgets! We already had to order extra supply of T-shirts!

Enough talking, just take a look:

PS. Any ideas, comments are highly welcomed! If you have an idea for a gadget, let us know!

A while ago we came with an idea about Wikidot-branded T-shirts and gadgets — a must-have for all Wikidot fans and friends. The first order has just arrived and here they are: brand new, 100% cotton, lead-free, high quality Wikidot T-shirts.

Later this week we will be opening a gadget store, initially featuring T-shirts and mugs — all with our logo printed or engraved.

Now here is the thing: there are

five ten free T-shirts to win!!!

Recent events (yes, I mean the performance and availability issues) made us reconsider our infrastructure — servers, routers, storage and how these things are set up. "Infrastructure" is not really something our users should be concerned about but we, the Wikidot Team, definitely should. The Wikidot promise is: we do the dirty job managing Wikidot platform and providing tools, you can concentrate on the cool stuff. Although the "dirty stuff" and whatever improvements we plan should not directly affect the way you use Wikidot, I believe it is good to share our plans in this matter too.

I am very sad to report that one of our servers has been hit by a power failure that resulted in filesystem inconsistency. Unfortunately this resulted in the global unavailability of Wikidot. But before I explain any further, I must say that:

No data is lost

except for file uploads from the last half hour before the crash.

Honestly, the last few weeks have been really difficult for our team. Mainly because of the performance of our servers and Wikidot service itself. Performance-related tickets were opened on our Feedback site: some users could not see their own posts, others double-posted their messages, tags were taking ages to change on some sites. Moreover activities were not updated in real-time for some users and errors were being thrown when searching sites from time to time.

Such problems are not "deadly", but fixing them is time consuming and require a lot of effort to diagnose and solve.

If, by any chance, any of our readers is attending Democamp in PoznaƄ (Poland) tomorrow (Friday), don't forget to give us a friendly punch. Wikidot won't be running a booth this time nor have a dedicated presentation, but if you are going to be there, it should be easy to spot us. We will be wearing prototypal Wikidot T-shirts.

Democamp is targeted towards web startups in early stages, often looking for business partners or investors. Definitely not where Wikidot is now, but I personally hope for a chat with my old friends and pitch a few ideas.

Right. T-shirts!!! We accidentally might have a few extra T-shirts with the Wikidot logo. Instead of giving them away to random people we rather give them to you, our Wikidot Community. But so far we have not yet decided how to do this.

T-shirts are available in multiple sizes. There is also a larger Wikidot logo on the back. Sorry, no real photo right now, but we will update it as soon as we can.

If you have an idea how we should give away the T-shirts, post it here! It might be an idea for a competition, or just a way to gift top community contributors. We will pick the best idea and simply do it!
