On Monday, 28th February 2011, between 9:00 and 9:30 AM UTC a maintenance of Wikidot service is planned.

We will upgrade database software (to PostgreSQL 9.0) and hardware. The planned down-time is no more than 5 minutes. The upgrade should improve both performance and stability for our backend services.

This week we're going to highlight some of the sites hosted and powered by Wikidot.com. Some of them are extremely popular and we hope the rest to get popular soon. There is no strict criteria for these picks — but these are the sites that often make us say Wow!, and we simply want to share the links with you in case you missed them.

A few weeks ago on this blog we mentioned a feature that we're introducing soon — the Dashboard. It is meant to be a central place to manage your messages, invitations, sites, storage, memberships and account settings.

At first a very basic (though fully functional) version of the Dashboard will be presented. The current status is it needs some polishing, but it's already totally usable. Later we'll update the Profile and Settings panel to manage your account easier (now it's a bit of a mess).

It has been a tough week for us — although we were pushing new fixes and improvements to Wikidot.com (as can be seen in the changelog), work was not the only challenge for us.

I guess it is the deceiving part of Winter where you get temporary warm-up and people believe they no longer need warm scarfs, hats and gloves. But it is also the time when flu viruses and various bacterias spread like crazy and infect people.

We could not resist the massive attack. The whole core team got ill at the same time, including our families and kids. Hopefully we have almost recovered by now and are getting strength to face the real problems at Wikidot.

Needless to say, this was an annoying experience. We had to cancel some business trips, and live with decreased productivity. Luckily we could all work remotely, but it is hard to be creative when you face fever and have to care about ill kids too.

Translating Wikidot has been a hot topic in the last week or two and today we want to make a sort of sum up and thank you note about it.

We'd like to thank very, very much for all that contributed their time to translate lots of boring and often problematic English messages to their native language. We've seen a lot of hard decisions being made, a lot of work with rewriting the translation, while we were fixing translation mistakes in English messages and still, much, much of enthusiasm while improving Wikidot international communicativeness.

About a week ago we introduced a new tool for Wikidot users — which gives the possibility to translate the Wikidot interface into non-English languages!

The translation is done by editing a Wikidot site: translate.wikidot.com. There is a discussion page for each language - so everyone can collaborate on the translations, add a missing translation or correct translation mistakes.

During the last 10 days, our users have made three complete translations (to French, German and Serbian). The credit for this goes to:

Also many thanks to jjsjjs for his contribution to the Finnish translation.
