MP3 Player
From the music-to-my-ears department on 1259419334|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
This morning I discovered James' Kanjo's excellent MP3 player for Wikidot, which is based on work done by Helmuti, Squark, and Piotr. Just add one line of code to your page, and upload an MP3 song (something you recorded in the shower, maybe), and your Wikidot site comes to life! (17 comments)
Happy Thanksgiving
From the turkey-sandwich department on 1259236022|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Today is, for our American friends, Thanksgiving. Historically, it's got something to do with turkey and corn, I think. Today, this is the day when friends and family gather to celebrate the American Dream, eat and drink, and prepare for Black Friday, the greatest shopping day ever. So I hear. (13 comments)
Yet Another Bug Tracker
From the head-on-keyboard department on 1259178557|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
scottplan writes, "[Head, meet keyboard…] rebygv67um" in response to my idea of starting a new bug tracker. The argument of "invest in existing structures" vs. "experiment with new structures" is one we've had several times, and will continue to have as long as Wikidot lets people start new sites with one click. New Posting Guidelines
From the no-running-jumping-or-shouting department on 1259148896|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
With the help of the Wikidot Tribal Council (the folks who built and manage the Community site), I've put together a set of guidelines that are meant to help keep controversial discussions healthy and constructive. (8 comments)
Tuesday Rant XVIII
From the call-that-a-rant? department on 1259055223|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Eighteen Tuesdays later… and we're still ranting. When I began using Wikidot three years ago for the CAPSoff website, I was user number 99. This month we hit 400,000 users. This is like finding a nice little valley, setting up a few tents and a campfire, and three years later, finding that the campsite has turned into a city. (22 comments)
Tuesday Rant XVII
From the whats-seventeen-in-roman-again? department on 1258402948|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Technically, at least in this part of the globe, it's still Monday. However, since tomorrow I find myself on a trip to London, it's time for the Tuesday Rant, which is that section of the blog where you tell us all the stuff you are unhappy about with Wikidot. To misquote the sages of olden times, Then, shalt thou wait until Tuesday, not later, no earlier. Tuesday shalt be the day thou shalt rant, and the day of the ranting shalt be Tuesday. Thursday thou shalt not rant, nor either ranteth thou Monday, excepting very late in the evening, perhaps around 10pm, and then only if Pieter has launched the blog post early. Friday is right out. Live Page Embedding
From the better-than-iframing department on 1258033092|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
The new cross-site includes feature lets you include the source of one page into another. We're finding lots of use for this powerful extension to normal includes, which used to work only inside one site. I'm going to show you a simple way of getting a live 'view' of another page. (9 comments)
New Newsletter
From the read-all-abaht-it! department on 1258026459|%e %B %Y, %H:%M

Today, or tomorrow (depending on how long ago you signed up for Wikidot), you will be getting a nice new shiny Wikidot Newsletter in your mailbox. We started the newsletter project in August, and it's taken us some time to get it all working, but from now on we'll be able to send this out once a month. (18 comments)
New Design Forum
From the it-all-comes-together department on 1257870629|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Steven Heynderickx has started a new section on the Projects Forum to discuss upcoming designs, and so we've moved the design section off its temporary home in this blog to a more natural space in that forum. (2 comments)
Tuesday Rant XVI
From the tuesday-rant-again-again department on 1257848963|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Hi, Wikidot users. Today is that day you can complain about all the things you dislike about Wikidot, wish we did differently, or just find silly. Let's have your rants! (35 comments)
New prices, 50%-off special offer
From the upgrade-while-its-hot department on 1257617469|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
We've fixed one more major bug in Wikidot.com: our pro accounts are too cheap. Ironically, being much cheaper than other wiki hosting firms means that many people look at Wikidot.com and think, "oh, cheap and unreliable!" So we are applying a simple solution: we're doubling our prices. (75 comments)
Show a Clock On Your Page
From the running-out-of-stripes department on 1257518133|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
The prodigious Shane Smith writes, "have you ever wanted to add an analog clock to your Wikidot site? I've just created a module that does exactly that!" (8 comments)
Finally, Faster File Uploads
From the ghosts-in-the-machine department on 1257342836|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Today we busted one of the more annoying bugs in Wikidot: uploading images would take forever (or around 30-40 seconds, whichever came first). I'm happy to be able to tell you that uploading now works properly, quickly, without delays, and without pauses, hiccups, slowdowns, dillydallying, lag, or even dawdling. (9 comments)
Tuesday Rant XV
From the so-tell-me-about-your-parents department on 1257237153|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Today it's Tuesday. Here in Torun, Poland, the sun is shining, and the birds are singing, or at least they would be if it was not so insanely cold that the birds are actually hiding in a hole in the ground, drinking vodka and tweeting "Kurwa! It's cold!" to each other. That's my rant for today: someone has turned off the heating here in Northern Europe, and it sucks. (49 comments)
Wikidot: Profitable And Growing
From the keeping-it-running department on 1257178012|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
When we launched Wikidot.com three years ago we had the vision of offering a reliable, fast, and economic way of building web sites, wikis, and social web applications. It was not clear, at the start, whether this plan would work. Today, I'm happy to be able to tell you that after almost a year of having introduced Pro accounts, Wikidot is making a modest but growing profit. (10 comments)
Cross-Site Includes
From the hotlinked-heaven department on 1256998777|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
On Thursday and Friday we rolled out a very important new feature, cross-site includes, or CSIs. CSIs make it possible to share code across sites. I'll explain roughly how this works, and provide some examples of where we're already using it. (16 comments)
Bye-bye Oooops!
From the yes-we-has-anglish department on 1256932007|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Wikidot.com originated in the lovely Polish city of Torun, which is famous for its stunning brick architectures, and lively nightlife. Today, of course, Wikidot.com is a global community, with most members coming from English speaking countries, especially America. So the original quaint language and spelling has started to look unprofessional. (29 comments)
Educational Status
From the put-the-apple-on-the-table department on 1256831498|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
While free private sites are limited to five members, Wikidot.com has offered universities and schools the option of unlimited private sites for their classes and courses. Now, we've decided to make it really simple to get an educational site. In your site manager Access policy page, just click the "educational upgrade" link, enter your school or university name, and description of project, and click "Please upgrade my site now". Albums Template
From the domo-arigato department on 1256732587|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
Today we saw the birth of a new Iron Giant template, for photo albums. This is Brunhilda's first reusable Wikidot application and it's worth checking out because it's so easy to use, and elegantly designed. I'm happy to award Brunhilda a well-earned brown belt for this achievement. One step closer to that coveted black belt, Brunhilda! :-) (7 comments)
Faster, more reliable, and eco-friendly too!
From the what's-fast-green-and-ends-in-a-dot department on 1256727478|%e %B %Y, %H:%M
This morning we finished an upgrade of Wikidot.com's database hardware to new servers that are faster than ever. This was so boring and uneventful that there was not a blip on the radar. All you will see is that Wikidot.com is now faster, that complex pages return faster, and that even under much heavier load, Wikidot.com will continue to run Fast & Smooth. (13 comments)
